Clipping and Layer Masks

For our masking assignment we were to create three clipping masks and three layers masks using the knowledge from a lesson on how to create them. Since I use Paint Tool Sai I did not find much difficulty with this assignment. Clipping and layer masks are my life when it comes to my digital art. However they are still tons of fun to make. A mask is basically an image fit over the previous layer or the on it’s clipped to. Clipping and layers masks are different from each other because layer masks let you edit the clipped image more.

Since my clipping masks are pretty self-explanatory I will more explain my layer masks. I used brushes to make the clipped image visible in some areas. For my winter mask I downloaded some snowflake brushes because I thought it’s fit more. I wish I had compared the two images I used more since the contrasting shades of blue don’t look to well together. For my rain image I created a simple gradient and for my desolate image I used a crack brush to fit the theme. The rebirth image was just me losing track of how many I’d done so far.

Our performance project was to create a motivational poster relating to a motivating word and quote. The first poster I did was the one with the leaping cougar. I used the refine edge tool to select it’s fur, however the mask I applied did not seem to like it so much and made look more of low quality. Since I did not like the end result of that one I made another poster to make up for it. This time I used the word ‘Wisdom’. That one is pretty straight forward, just a layer mask with some added layer effects to it. However I noticed that the bottom part of the image underneath the quote looking a bit empty so I downloaded an image of a quill and live traced it in adobe illustrator. I then chanced the color of it since it was originally black. I feel like it takes the cake on the image since it fits the theme of the poster.
