Blog: Virtual Pet Sims

This page contains a blog for English Composition B.

About Me:

My name is Tayonna, I am currently a senior in high school. My favorite past times consist of drawing, reading, and following pet sim communities on Tumblr. I’ve been playing virtual pet sims since 2015. The first sim I ever played was Flight Rising and I have loved it since.

I enjoy pet sims because they are a good way to pass the time if you just want something to do. They don’t necessarily require a lot of time to play and all include their own form of creativity. Pet sim communities tend to be very close-knit so they tend to be friendly environments. For this blog, I will be posting about the games, Flight Rising, Lioden, and Chicken Smoothie.

Chicken Smoothie: The Small Change That Made a BIG Difference

Updated: Feb 7, 2019

Last week, Chicken Smoothie (CS) posted an update to their game. This was quite unusual at first glance considering how Chicken Smoothie never posts anything referring to the functions of its game. Turns out, Chicken Smoothie made a huge change to how its game works. This change to CS altered many aspects about the game which you will read about below.

What is Chicken Smoothie?

Chicken Smoothie is a virtual pet game based on receiving a limited amount of pets each month and watching them grow up into different outcomes. Each outcome has a different rarity (listed below) and which is assigned based on the ratio of the outcome compared to the number of accounts who own the pet. You can read more about CS in this post.

  • OMG so rare

So what’s new?

Chicken Smoothie has implemented a new change to the ratio system. In the past, the ratio system which determined a pet’s rarity was based on how many account on the website owned the same pet. However, this system became more and more inaccurate as time moved on as some accounts just weren’t active anymore. This became a problem because only active accounts would get new pets, but because the older inactive amounts didn’t have the new pets, it caused the newer pets to be labeled rarer than they were actually worth. The “uncommon” rarity group fell victim to this as new pets which were less than a month old were determined to be uncommon as compared to other uncommon pets which were as old as ten years. The new update fixes this by determining the rarity of pets by comparing the outcome to how many active accounts have the pet as opposed to all accounts. See the "Understanding Rarity" page on the CS Wiki to learn more about rarities.

Aftermath of the rarity fix:

CS is a game which is heavily focused around collecting rare pets, because of this trading with other users in an important part of the game. As a result of this new update, many pets faced a sharp decline in their worth and had the CS trade economy redetermining the worth of their collections or the pets they hoped to receive someday. The trade economy of the game may take some time to readjust to the change.

Conclusion

Whether this change is good or bad if up to your own point of view. Maybe you don’t like the change to so many pets declining in rarity or having to reorganize your collection based on rarity. Or perhaps you do like this change because it allows pets to be more accurately labeled or because it’s a brand new take on the game. Even so, it’s nice to see new changes coming to CS because the staff hasn’t touched the game’s mechanics in several years. It’s a nice reminder to its users that it’s still alive and kicking!
